I've always had a fear of dentists. I put off going for many years because my previous experiences had left me in pain. I knew that my dental recovery would take several visits and just the thought of having a stranger's hands in my mouth - even one time - left me feeling nauseous. I thought if I could just find a dentist who would send me into a nap-like state and do all the really bad stuff all at once – I would be very happy.
Advanced Sedation Dentistry was my answer. Because the dentist was a certified general anesthesiologist he was able to put me to sleep to do the necessary dental work of pulling six teeth and doing periodontal work. On the next visit, I was given a simple pill, which put me into a light sleep. The next day I remembered nothing about the visit except that I went.
I travel 100 miles to go to Advanced Sedation Dentistry and it is worth every mile. Because of their practice I now have straight teeth where they were once crooked, and I'm no proud of my smile – all of this without the fear and dread of pain.
Thank you, to the entire staff at Advanced Sedation Dentistry. I would continue to come to you even if I lived 300 miles away!

I have always had an irrational fear of dentists. I've had panic attacks due to being numbed. It is very hard for me to have someone put their hands in my mouth. Having all the "stuff" in my mouth, especially what feels like huge pieces of cotton, makes me feel like I am going to choke, sending me into panic mode. I have a strong gag reflex and my nose seems to forget how to breathe when my mouth is so busy. I had some unpleasant experiences as a child and teenager when I was unable to cooperate with the dentist and he would squeeze my mouth shut very firmly with his large hand. The simple thought of needing to find a dentist would bring on a panic attack. I did not go to a dentist for many, many, many years. Infection and extreme pain I could no longer control with Tylenol and aspirin caused me to begin searching online for a trustworthy, kind, qualified dentist who would knock me out and not judge me for my irrational fears and also respect my main wish of not being numb when I woke up.
About a year and a half ago, I found Advanced Sedation Dentistry in Virginia Beach and emailed for an appointment, being too "chicken" to call.
I chose Dr. Futerman because of his qualifications as a dental anesthesiologist and the additional training he has. I appreciate the friendliness of Joanna, who goes out of her way to be helpful and accommodating. I appreciate Dr. Futerman's calm, gentle, non-judging manner of working with me and honoring my wishes. I have not woken up from any procedures with a numb mouth and panic. The entire staff at Advanced Sedation Dentistry has always been very kind, always making sure I am comfortable. I especially like the fact that they have a very modern way of taking X-rays without putting a huge contraption in my mouth – just a little thing that you place between your front teeth.
Even with having teeth extracted, a root canal and many fillings, my experiences have been pleasant. I have always chosen IV sedation. I have never experienced any pain during or after any of the dental work I have had done, and never needed any pain medication afterwards.
Advanced Sedation Dentistry is where I'll continue to have all my dental needs taken care of even though I drive 120 miles round trip because I live in Corapeake, North Carolina. It is so worth it to me.

Thank you to Dr. Futurman and his staff for taking such good care of our baby. He had four decayed teeth in the upper front, and we were very apprehensive about having him put to sleep to have this work done. Thank goodness Dr. Futurman was able to save all the teeth with caps. He came through the entire procedure just fine. We highly recommend this establishment to anyone who has small children.

The first dentist I went to couldn't see Carson for two months, and I didn't want to have to worry about his teeth getting worse. That's when I found Advanced Sedation Dentistry. Joanna got us in for a consultation ASAP, and before I knew it, we were four days away from the surgery. I was very nervous, but the decision was easy once I found out the work would be done in the office instead of the hospital, and that Dr. Futerman would be the surgeon as well as the anesthesiologist. The added bonus was that Dr. Phillips made my son feel very comfortable being in the dental chair. I didn't want Carson to be scared to return to the dentist in the future.
The day of surgery went well! Both doctors came out of the OR to personally update us about Carson. And the best part was the recovery! Carson was very sleepy for a few hours, but never complained about pain. He even went to school the next day because he wanted to.
