COMMUNITY WORK
For more than 15 years, Dr. Futerman has volunteered at the Chesapeake Care Clinic as a dental surgeon in the Hampton Roads Dental Center. He has provided countless hours of diagnostic and therapeutic dental-surgical services as well as serving as a clinical instructor for dental students rotating from the VCU School of Dentistry.
For the last two years, Dr. Futerman and ASD have partnered with Dr. Biery and MountainView Dental to spread free smiles across the state of Virginia through the Dentistry from the Heart organization. Heading into its third year, the team hopes to provide 200 free smiles in one intense day of donating dentistry to those in need with limited access to care. Dr. Futerman continues to support Operation Smile, a worldwide charity for children with correctable facial deformities such as cleft palate.
As an Old Dominion University Alumnus, Dr. Futerman supports his alma mater by sponsoring the collegiate athletic program and attending events. Dr. Futerman remains grateful to the community of Hampton Roads for helping ASD grow from a one-provider location to a multiple-office, multi-specialty practice offering pain-free, worry-free dentistry from the Oceanfront to the Shenandoah Valley.
Shelbi graduated from UNC Chapel Hill (Go, Heels!) with a BS in Biology, then went on to dental school at Boston University, where she received her DMD. In addition, Shelbi did a one-year advanced education residency in general dentistry through East Carolina University.
To Shelbi, dentistry isn’t just drilling and filling but the perfect blend of art and science. Although she loves many facets of dentistry, Shelbi most enjoys getting to know her patients. To her, the heart of patient care is taking a personalized approach; she believes each patient’s smile is special. Whether a patient’s concern is cosmetic, restorative, or a dental emergency, Shelbi creates a genuine connection with each of her patients and provides them with excellent and individualized care. It’s easy to see that she takes her passion for dental care and her patients’ smiles to heart.
Outside of the office, Shelbi spends her time with her husband, their cat (Sawyer), and two dogs (Chief and Mack), enjoying the oceanfront and all that the area has to offer. In addition to exploring Virginia Beach, Shelbi loves gardening, cooking, and perfecting her craft of floral arranging.
